Mick Schumacher, the Mercedes reserve driver for 2023, has been making waves with rumors suggesting he might replace rookie Logan Sargeant at Williams. Schumacher, who landed a reserve role at Mercedes after being dropped by Haas, has been very candid about his eagerness to return to the F1 grid.
Logan Sargeant is the first American driver to compete in Formula 1 since Alexander Rossi in 2015. With Williams already struggling, Sargeant did not quite deliver the way they had hoped. In his first race in Bahrain, Sargeant qualified 16th and finished 12th, two places behind his teammate Alex Albon. He then finished 16th in Saudi Arabia and Australia. In Miami, he was running in 15th place before he was forced to retire due to tyre degradation. He also retired in the recent race in Canada. And while he has shown flashes of speed, his average race finish is at the 16th spot.
Despite his current (poor) form, the team is likely to be patient with the rookie as they have invested heavily in bringing Sargeant into F1. That doesn’t seem to dampen the spirits of Schumacher though! With pressure to perform as well as his 7-time champion father, Michael, the young driver seems prepared to jump straight into the cockpit to prove himself on track.
